Two independent inspections before you buy a car: what the specialist checks and what the service center adds

A quick look and a short drive around the block is the most common way to buy a car that comes with a surprise. We check every car in two stages: first our specialist on site, then diagnostics at a specialist service center. Here's what each of them looks at and why one stage can't replace the other.

Why two inspections

The first inspection answers the question “is this car worth pursuing?” It's quick, takes place wherever the car is parked, and weeds out most of the bad options before you spend anything on diagnostics. The second goes deeper: on a lift, with equipment, following a checklist. Together they give you a full picture of the car's condition, not just an impression from the photos in a listing.

Stage 1: the specialist on site

Our specialist goes to the car and checks:

  • The body. Paint thickness on every panel with a paint gauge, repainted parts, body filler, panel gaps, signs of repair, chips and scratches. Uneven gaps and varying paint thickness are typical signs of repairs after an accident.
  • Start-up and test drive. How the engine starts (ideally from cold), whether there are any unusual noises, how the car drives, brakes and holds the road.
  • The transmission. Smooth shifting, jolts, delays, behavior under load.
  • Electronics and features. Infotainment, climate control, heating, cameras, sensors, power windows: everything listed in the spec.
  • Interior, glass and lights. The condition of the upholstery, signs of moisture, cracks and chips.
  • Tires, brakes and wheels. Remaining tread and how evenly it's worn, the condition of the brake discs, damage to the wheels.

Most importantly, everything is recorded on video. You see the real car, not carefully chosen angles, and you can make a decision without driving hundreds of kilometers.

Stage 2: diagnostics at a specialist service center

If the car passes the first stage and you're happy with everything, we take it to a service center that specializes in that make or type of car. There they check what can't be assessed in a parking lot:

  • The engine. Computer diagnostics, fault codes stored in the control units and, if needed, a compression test or borescope inspection of the cylinders; leaks.
  • The transmission. Fault codes, adaptations, condition according to the control unit data.
  • The running gear. Suspension, steering, bushings and shock absorbers, all on a lift.
  • The underbody. Corrosion, signs of repairs to the frame rails and sills, fluid leaks.
  • The electronics. The state of systems that don't always show up on a short drive.

Our specialist goes along with the car and draws up in advance a list of the components that need checking on this particular model. The diagnostics follow a checklist agreed with you, and afterwards you get the results and our conclusions.

Why one stage can't replace the other

An on-site inspection won't show the condition of the suspension from below or the fault codes stored in the control units. And a service center visit without a prior inspection means spending money and time on a car that could have been ruled out in the parking lot because of a repainted body. The “specialist first, then service center” sequence means you don't pay for in-depth checks on obviously bad options, and you don't miss expensive problems either.

What to do with the results

The inspection results are about more than “buy or don't buy”. Every issue found is a bargaining point: you know what will need doing after the purchase and how much it may cost. And if the problems are serious, the right call is to move on to the next option, even if you really like the car.

How Ukrainiancars can help

We have specialists in different cities across Ukraine, and we check every car in two stages. After the inspection, our team reviews the materials and discusses the car with you; after the diagnostics, we negotiate with the seller and arrange the re-registration and delivery. If we don't like a car, we'll tell you so directly.
